Salaries and working conditions in Portugal
The minimum wage in Portugal is €780 gross per month, although your language skills and experience may increase your salary.
In Portugal, the average salary for a French expatriate is between €800 and €1,200 gross per month plus any bonuses. In addition, each person working in the country benefits from a 13th and 14th month, paid in two instalments during the year: just before the summer and just before Christmas. A packed lunch is also provided.
Salaries are lower than in France and the Nordic countries, but the cost of living is much lower in Portugal. You can eat in a restaurant for 7.50€ starter, main course and dessert.
Shopping is cheaper if you live like a local. Imported products such as cheese or foreign wine are very expensive compared to the salary you earn, but products such as fruit, vegetables and fish are very affordable.
Working conditions are different from French standards, as workers generally work 40 hours a week.
The Portuguese work on Saturdays most of the time and the shops are all open, even on Sundays !
Housing, Administration : How to organise?
In Easy Relocate, we've noticed that this can be a complex first step, as Lisbon has undergone a great deal of development over the last 5-10 years, which has led to a rise in property prices.
In addition, the majority of landlords speak mainly Portuguese, which can make communication difficult and, consequently, the search for the ideal home complicated. We advise you to find out about the neighbourhoods and market prices before you leave for Portugal so that you have an informed eye on the properties on offer.
You can also meet expatriates in Portugal and ask them for advice. For your search, we can also advise you, direct you to certain entities with whom we are in contact in order to help you find your accommodation and carry out your administrative procedures.
As a European citizen, you have the right to live and work directly in Portugal, provided that you have registered with the authorities. Your registration will allow you to obtain a Tax Identification Number (NIF), which is necessary to open a bank account.
It is essential to carry out all the administrative procedures, in particular the declaration of your income to the Portuguese Tax Office. Requesting it takes a few minutes and will cost you around ten euros. Remember to apply for it as soon as possible as it can take a while to receive it!
To obtain your Social Security Identification Number (NIS), you must have an activity in Portugal. All you have to do is go to the "casa da cidadao" to declare yourself. The following month, you will receive your NIS at home.
In order to facilitate the integration of expatriates, measures have been put in place such as the payment of your bills, the recharging of your transport pass or your telephone subscription through automatic distributors.
